Survey results show what the community wants the future of Harding Ave. to look like

Eau Claire (WQOW) - City traffic engineers now have a more clear picture about what residents want for the future of a busy Eau Claire street.

Survey results have been compiled on what motorists want Harding Ave. to look like. Earlier this summer, the city closed off access to Lee and Jefferson Street and reduced Harding Ave. uphill to one lane, to see if a bike lane would work there instead.

The survey showed only 34 percent of people favor a bike lane and ending access to those two streets. Fifty one percent said they like Jefferson Ave. as is.

Another 22 percent favored allowing only right turns onto and off of Jefferson Ave. As for the Lee Street intersection with Harding Ave., 31 percent favored not changing anything.

City transportation engineer Leah Ness said the study showed that closing off Harding Ave. access to Jefferson St. would create a 15 percent increase in traffic at the nearby Farwell and Jefferson St. intersection.

Ness said the study and survey results will be presented to the 3rd Ward Neighborhood Association on December 13 and the East Side Hill Neighborhood Association on December 14. Feedback from those meetings will then be used to formulate recommendations to the city council in February.
