People question security of downtown Milwaukee parking lot after cars vandalized

Posted:

Milwaukee (WISN) -- Milwaukee police say they are working with a downtown parking lot's administrators to enhance security and to prevent future incidents after nearly 40 cars were vandalized over the weekend.

"(We will) probably will never park here again. Why would we?" Amtrak train passenger Mary Rollo asked.

WISN 12 News took Rollo's question to City Hall. The Rollos' car was one of dozens hit by vandals.

"It's very disappointing. We're on our way home. After a trip you'd like to get home right away. So now we're probably going to be here for hours," Rollo said.

"This private parking lot operator is basically casting his customers to the winds in terms of providing basic security," Milwaukee Alderman Bob Bauman said.

The operator of the parking lot at the Intermodal Station on St. Paul Avenue is a private company -- Interstate Parking of Milwaukee.

Neither Amtrak, Greyhound or the city have direct control over the parking lot.

Bauman commented on the lot's city-approved license application regarding security.

"And in the instance of this application, it's essentially blank. In other words, they have no security plan," Bauman said.

Interstate Parking said it takes issue with that statement, pointing to multiple security cameras and beefed up private security patrols after the Thanksgiving weekend vandalism.

It is promising to do better. So is the city.

"We're going to look to tighten up, and not just ask for their security plan, but mandate certain specific security requirements," Bauman said.

For the time being, Rollo is unconvinced.

"You know, I'm going to put it on Facebook. Never come back here," Rollo said.

WISN 12 News was told there is surveillance video of the vandals in action, but it's not being shared because there's an ongoing investigation.
