New bill would give tax credits, grants to CNAs

Madison (WQOW) - Wisconsin Democrats are pushing for a bill they say would make it easier for certified nursing assistants to stay in their field.

CNAs work on the front lines in long-term care and nursing facilities. Many say the expensive training and near-minimum-wage salaries make it difficult to get training or make a living, so some are leaving the trade altogether.

Democrats held a press conference Tuesday about the benefits of the new bill.

“They're not being adequately compensated,” said Rep. Jonathan Brostoff (D-Milwaukee). “So we see a market force at play where we have people who are turning over at very high rates as we've heard. We have people who are choosing not to enter the field because they could make more money at Kwik Trip."

The bill includes a tax credit and grants for CNA training, plus a Medicaid reimbursement rate for personal care services that would go directly to caretakers' wages.
