Town of Eagle Point and Progressive Rail butt heads over the future of a popular road

Chippewa County (WQOW) - A one mile stretch of road north of Chippewa Falls is becoming a hot topic of discussion, because a railroad company wants to close it.

Eagle Point Chairman Dennis Ferstenou told News 18 Progressive Rail is petitioning to close 95th Ave., which connects Hwy. 124 and Hwy.178 just north of Chippewa Falls.

The rail company said by closing the road, they will be able to connect rail cars without blocking Hwy. S which is just to the south. Ferstenou said the township hasn't found any proof to back up that claim.

Ferstenou said Progressive Rail first came to the township with a proposal to build an overpass on the road back in 2015. They ultimately decided against that idea because the sand mind industry slowed down.

The township argues that 95th Ave. has too much traffic to close it, a problem they expect to only get worse once the Fleet Farm distribution center opens.

If Progressive Rail and the township don't come to an agreement, a hearing on the road's future would likely take place in January or February.
