Chippewa Falls leaders take a unique approach to curbing suicide in the city

Chippewa Falls (WQOW) - After months of collaboration, and hard work, leaders in Chippewa Falls have put together a resource guide they hope prevents suicides in our community.

More than two dozen local stakeholders, from faith leaders to public school officials, created the Chippewa Falls Community Suicide Postvention Handbook.

The roughly 50-page guide has resources and best practices for what to do after a suicide. Officials said postvention, if done correctly, actually prevents future suicides.

"A lot of it comes back to safe messaging, to make sure we over and over reiterate that suicide's a public health issue," said Chippewa Falls Superintendent Heidi Eliopoulos. "That it is generally preventable and it's so important that every time we talk about suicide we talk about warning signs, as well as resources."The handbook also includes tips for talking to kids about traumatic events, and advice about grief for people who lost a loved one from suicide.
