UPDATE:
Altoona police have confirmed a woman died Monday night after being struck by a car.

Lieutenant David Livingston said the call first came in around 5 p.m. He said an adult woman was crossing an uncontrolled intersection (meaning it did not have stop or street lights) on Hwy 12 near Nottingham Way. Police said it was likely difficult for the driver to see the woman. Traffic eastbound on Hwy 12 was closed for hours while officials re-constructed the crash scene.

"It's a tragedy that we never want to see," Lt. Livingston said. "We want to make sure that everybody is safe. We want to make sure that we do our job as law enforcement to make sure that we cover all of our elements of our investigation to make sure that it's done right."

A number of agencies were on scene, including Altoona fire and police, State Patrol and the Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department.

The crash remains under investigation. The driver is not in custody, and police are unsure if charges will be filed.
