FDA proposes crackdown on homeopathic remedies

Eau Claire (WQOW)- With a growing trend to keep things natural and holistic, more people are turning to homeopathic medicine. Now The Federal Drug Administration is saying to take a step back.

Earlier this week the FDA approved a new policy to crack down on high-risk homeopathic remedies. These are over-the-counter products marketed to heal or treat anything from colds, pain, diseases or even cancer. But because they are labeled 'homeopathic' the products do not need FDA approval, are not held to the same regulatory standards and do not need to include side effect or warning information. The administration said because of this, there is no guarantee that what is inside the bottle is the same as what's on the outside.

On Thursday News 18 spoke with Pharm.D. Bonnie Menard with HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital. Menard said most health professionals won't tell you not to use these products, but if you do,talk to your doctor or pharmacist beforehand. Menard said just because there are no side effects listed doesn't mean they don't exist.

"While your pharmacist might know that [remedy] might interact with your blood pressure meds or it might interact with your birth control pill, it doesn't have to be on the label. And so you might end up with a situation that is worse than where you started because it's interacting with the medications that you're currently on, so it's really important to talk to someone and make sure it's safe," Menard said.

Health experts said while a healthy person may not see any side effects, it can be especially dangerous for those with pre-existing conditions or small children.
