Eau Claire (WQOW)- While some were ringing in the new year, others could be ringing their lawyer after a handful of drivers were arrested this weekend for driving under the influence.
Eau Claire Police issued five DUI's over the weekend, three of those happening just on Sunday night. But police said all three of those New Year's Eve DUI's involved a hit and run vehicle crash. All of the drivers, though, were found and arrested. Because of a new recording system officials said it's hard to compare from year-to-year, or weekend to weekend, but the winter months tend to draw more DUI's than in the spring or fall.
"Driving while intoxicated and getting behind the wheel after alcohol is always very dangerous, but it's especially dangerous with our poor road conditions. That's one of the other factors I think we see an increase in OWI's in the winter months, it's also harder to navigate the icy roads. We're seeing icy roads again [Monday] and this weekend," said Officer Bridget Coit with the Eau Claire Police Department.
Police said the icy roads could have been a factor in those DUI crashes.
