New Eau Claire project aimed at beautifying city while providing food for the hungry

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Downtown Eau Claire Incorporated (DECI) has announced the first Downtown Enhancement Grant.  Brent Stelzer of Brent Douglas Flowers submitted the plan to create portable garden planters to be placed along South Barstow Street between Lake and Seaver Streets.

This $2,000 award was made possible by a donation from Lissa and Tom Siedow.

With the $2,000 grant, Brent Douglas Flowers will create portable garden planters to be placed in the boulevard during the summer, lining the street on both sides of Barstow. Planters will be planted with vegetables and flowers in the spring and maintained by the employees, volunteers and residents of the Beacon House, American Insurance, Brent Douglas Flowers, and the Sojourner House. They will all share the responsibility of watering, weeding and other care.

During the summer, flowers will improve the beauty of the street.  And during harvest, the shelters will provide additional food.

“We are excited by the beautification and engagement this project will provide to an important gateway to downtown,” said Mike Schatz, executive director of DECI.

Applications for the next grant cycle will be released on Monday, April 2 and due Friday, June 1, 2018. The next grant will be awarded at the Board of Directors Meeting in July. For more information contact downtown@eauclairewi.gov or visit DowntownEauClaire.org
