Eau Claire (WQOW) - The frigid cold is on hiatus but the problems with your pipes might be just beginning.
Several plumbing companies in the Chippewa Valley told News 18 the calls keep coming in for pipes that are thawing out and busting.
Experts said when pipes break from the freeze, the problems often don't show until they thaw and the water starts pouring in. Experts recommend keeping the space warm as best you can.
"The electricity draw from a space heater can often times cause other problems outside of that, so you (have to be) really careful about putting space heaters in," said Jamie Guibord with Service First Plumbing. "If you know an area is going to freeze you want to get some air flowing, throw a fan on it. Open the cabinets if it's in a cabinet so that the warm air in the house can get in to that cabinet. Often times they're closed off and it'll freeze in that cabinet."
Guibord said even though you may be trying to save a few bucks, it's important to leave your heat on even while you're not at home. If you're going out of town and think a pipe may be frozen, turn off your water.
