Eau Claire (WQOW) -- Mayo Clinic Health System is hosting a special panel to help you better understand heart disease and how it may affect your family, friends, or even yourself.

On February 15, you can attend "Her Story, Her Heart" at the Mayo Clinic Health System auditorium in Eau Claire at 6:30 p.m.

What is "Her Story - Her Heart?"

  • A panel of women will share personal stories: Heart attack, heart failure, valve disease
    • what they faced and help they found.
  • Guided discussion, serve as medical resources.
  • Healthy treats, music and prizes.

We often hear that women miss their own heart disease symptoms. Why?

  • Women tend to take care of others before themselves.
  • Symptoms often vague: Fatigue, shortness of breath, jaw pain

How serious is cardiovascular disease in women?

  • Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women - more than all cancers combined.
  • Women account for about 6 in 10 stroke deaths.
    • Stroke is a cardiovascular event -- just like arteries in the heart can be blocked, so too can arteries in the brain.
