Bitter cold means thick ice for Altoona's Winter Fest

Altoona (WQOW) - Preparations for Winter Fest and Games 2018 are underway on Lake Altoona.

On Thursday, crews braved the bitter cold to continue setting up for the annual winter festival. Guests will be happy to know the main tent on land will be heated this weekend.

Organizers told News 18 the freezing temperatures aren't so bad, because they mean extra thick ice out on the lake. In fact, they said this year is the best the ice has ever been.

"We out on the lake [Thursday] morning; 31 inches of ice. You want about a foot of ice, to feel safe on it. We got about an extra two feet," said Randy Kuhnert, Winter Fest's race director. "You could realistically drive some pretty big stuff out here and a lot of stuff out here and this lake's not moving. It's the safest it's been in years."

That's a good thing too, because there will be all kinds of races out on the ice over the weekend as well as ice bowling, broom ball and skating. See below for a list of events and times.
