Eau Claire's Parks and Recreation Department held its Winter Safety Day event Thursday evening at Pinehurst Park, even though it was bitterly cold outside.
The event was held to teach the public the importance of remembering safety while enjoying winter activities like sledding, skiing and snowboarding. Mayo Clinic Health System and the Eau Claire Fire and Rescue Department joined in on the fun to educate people on proper helmet wearing tips.
"We wanted to host the event to remind people how important it is to wear helmets during winter sports. They can be life-saving," Parks and Rec Program Supervisor Chad Duerkop told News 18.
There was fun to the night though too. The Parks and Rec Department had a bonfire at the warming house, free hot chocolate and s'mores for attendees to enjoy.
Volume One hosted its Winter After Hours event at the park on Thursday night, where crowds enjoyed watching a cross-country skiing race.
