Baraboo (WKOW) -- A Sauk County Firefighter who was hospitalized after being hit on the job just days ago is back home recovering with serious injuries. Tuesday afternoon, Joe Sabol, had a full escort with more than 35 law enforcement personnel participating in the procession.
"It was a very warm welcome," Lake Delton Fire Chief Darren Jorgenson said. His wife, Amanda, is helping her husband on his long road to recovery after he miraculously survived being struck by a driver Saturday morning. Firefighter Sabol was helping conduct traffic during a tragic accident on I-90/94 when the incident happened.
"Joe didn't remember what happened initially, and now he kind of says when he remembers what happened, 'it kind of feels like I got hit by a car.' He did. 'No one saw saw me, no one was paying attention.'" she said.
Amanda says the firefighter would like to return to active duty as soon as he is able, but she just hopes the community slows down during emergency situations to avoid another near tragedy.
"So now all I need is for the community that he loves to show him some love respect him and his guys and just move over and slow down," she said.
