How a free event benefited both kids and dental students

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Kids can smile a little brighter today thanks to some help from area students.

Friday was CVTC's annual "Give Kids a Smile Day."

Kids from the age of 2 to 13 got free cleanings, exams and dental work all done by CVTC students and faculty.

Supplies were donated by the Wisconsin Dental Association and Shine Dental to offset the $8,000 to $10,000 of work provided. Prevea Health even did health screenings.

Organizers said many families look forward to this event and even start scheduling appointments as early as January.

The benefit is two-fold. It gives kids whiter smiles, and students real-world work experience.

"[It's] just seeing everybody, like the medical and the nursing and the dental residents and students that are here all working toward a common goal which is to provide care to the people that lack excess to care," said CVTC's Dental Hygiene Program Director, Pam Entorf. "So, it's really giving our students an opportunity to see what it's really going to be like out there in a fast-paced dental clinic."

It's the event's 14th year. About 100 kids received dental care.
