Representative Ron Kind lays out 2018 goals

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - -

Jobs, the economy and healthcare costs. All topped the agenda at a forum hosted by U.S. Congressman Ron Kind Monday, but he warns government funded healthcare is a long way off.

Kind told a crowd of constituents at Western Technical College he's got big goals for 2018. Kind said a recent survey ranked him as the 2nd most bipartisan member of Congress. He says more of it needs to happen to accomplish his goals for the year.

Topping the list is jobs. Kind says Congress needs to be creating a strong, growing economy including not letting the jobs leave Wisconsin. Dozens of voters in attendance expressed their concerns on topics like global warming and wanting lawmakers to make it a high priority.

Others expressed concerns about healthcare costs and the future of medicare. A bill being discussed in Washington D.C. would create a Medicare for all system. Kind likes the idea, but says more blanks on the bill need to be filled out.

"One of the conundrums we have here throughout western Wisconsin, we've historically been one of the lowest medicare reimbursement regions in the entire country," Kind explained. "That needs to get fixed before we go to a medicare for all system."

Congressman Kind says going to such a system would lock in the rate and set up healthcare providers in the state for failure. Kind also believes Congress and the president need to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for the rising prescription drug prices and the opioid epidemic affecting every state.

Finally with the deadline to pass a fix for DACA only a few weeks away, Kind says it needs to be the focus of the house and senate, but says so far leadership has not made promises to even debate it.
