C & M Builders got the green light Tuesday night to build a new housing development on the east side of Jeffers Road in Eau Claire, despite opposition from nearly 100 neighboring homeowners.
The Eau Claire City Council approved the plan on a 6-4 vote, after a debate about whether the 28 new single homes and 39 twin homes would hurt the value of neighboring properties.
Council member Kate Beaton was among those voting no, saying she could not ignore the pleas from those 90 homeowners. However, council member Kathy Mitchell joined the majority voting yes, saying she was bothered by the complaints of some neighbors, who said they did not want strangers driving on their streets. "We welcome strangers," she told the council.
The other council members who voted against the project were Bob Von Haden, Tim Tewalt and Catherine Emmanuelle.
