Milwaukee (WISN) -- A 53-year-old Milwaukee man died early Sunday after being struck by a Milwaukee County Transit System bus on the city's west side.
Authorities said the man was hit near North 35th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue shortly after midnight. The victim was seriously injured and pronounced dead at the scene.
MCTS spokesman Brendan Conway said the collision occurred outside of a crosswalk as the Gold Line driver was heading back to the garage after his last stop. There were no passengers on the bus.
"What I can tell you is that he's a veteran driver. He's well-liked and well-known. He's done an amazing job throughout his career, and he's devastated by all of this. This is probably a driver's worst nightmare," he said.
The driver has been put on leave during the investigation.
