Requiem mass held for Fr. Kunz 20 years after unsolved death

Posted: Updated:

CROSS PLAINS (WKOW) -- Sunday marks twenty years since Fr. Alfred Kunz was found dead inside a Dane County church.

People gathered Saturday to remember him, hoping to finally get some answers in his death.

Even though it's been two decades since Fr. Kunz's death, his murder remains unsolved and on the minds of many in the community.

Very Rev. Richard Heilman says Kunz was a mentor to him and helped to influence his beliefs.

"He was a pioneer, in that he was restoring that sense of the super natural the sense of the sacred and the way he offered the mass," said Heilman.

St. Mary's of Pine Bluff Catholic Church held a requiem mass Saturday to honor Kunz. An employee at St. Michael's Church in the town of Dane found him with his throat slit in the morning of March 4th, 1998. No one has ever been arrested in connection with his death.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office if hoping to re-invigorate the investigation of Kunz's death and get to the bottom of what really happened.

"I was really glad to see that they're putting more effort into it. You know there's so many conspiracy theories out there and I'm not landing on anyone of those I'm waiting to see the unadulterated truth," Heilman told 27 News.

Dane County sheriff's officials say anyone with information should reach out to the sheriff's office at
