Eau Claire (WQOW) -- Nearly 5,000 runners took off for the 2018 Eau Claire Marathon, early Sunday morning.
Runners made their way from Carson Park, either running a 5k, a half-marathon or the full 26.2 mile marathon, eventually ending their race back in Carson Park. Race organizers told News 18, people from 29 different states and four different countries participated in the marathon. Organizers say that shows just how much this event has grown, and they credit the community for its success.
"The stories that we see and hear of all the runners are remarkable. All 5,000 runners have something on their mind when they're running this race, often times it's more than just running the race, it's for somebody," said marathon director, Pat Toutant. "It's really fun to see that satisfaction, and rewarding to see people step out of the box, challenge themselves and then complete it."
Toutant also thanked community members for cheering on the runners and for being patient with the road closures and detours set for the race.
