Eau Claire (WQOW) -- It's that time of year when people start landscaping or gardening projects, but officials are offering a word of warning before you dig.
You've likely seen the little colored flags around town or in your neighborhood - they're there to show where the underground utilities are in your yard. Xcel Energy told News 18 you should call 811 or the Diggers Hotline at least three days before you plan to dig, so officials can come out and mark your yard. Xcel also said, anytime you have a shovel in your hand is a time you should call.
"If you are digging and you do hit something, the first thing you should probably do is call 911 because you're either hitting a natural gas line or something else. It could be extremely dangerous," said Xcel spokesperson, Chris Ouellette.
Ouellette also said calling is free and easy, and companies will come to you to properly mark where water, phone, electric and other line are, to keep you safe during your project.
