(CNN) - A New York couple is facing felony charges after police said they faked their son's cancer.Martin and Jolene LaFrance raised more than $3,000 on a GoFundMe page that claimed their son was being treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma.
They are both charged with first-degree scheme to defraud, and endangering the welfare of a child.
The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office arrested them after a tip led to a four-month investigation.
Their son apparently believed he had cancer, and he got to practice with the Syracuse University football team after players and staff were told of his diagnosis.
Sheriff's officials said their investigation revealed conclusively that the child was never diagnosed with cancer or any other medical condition.
GoFundMe issued a statement saying donors will get a refund.
