Clark County (WQOW) - We now know the names of the people involved in a fatal officer-involved shooting in Clark County.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Clark County Sheriff's Deputy Nicholas Klemm and Loyal Police Officer Jacob Schar shot, and killed, the suspect Kelly Abbott, 51, of Black River Falls.
The DOJ said officers tried to pull over Abbott, who had a felony warrant on Friday, but he took off and led authorities on a high speed chase. They said the chase ended after police put out stop sticks. Officials said when Abbott got out of his vehicle, he was holding a gun. He shot at officers and they returned fire, killing Abbott.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave as the incident is investigated.
Clark County (WQOW) -- One person was killed in Clark County after leading law enforcement on a high speed chase, which ended with a shoot out.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, officers tried to pull over a person with a felony warrant on Friday, but the subject took off and led authorities on a high speed chase. They said the chase ended after police put out stop sticks, but when the person got out of their vehicle they were holding a gun.
The DOJ said the subject shot at the officers and a Clark County Sheriff's deputy and a Loyal Police Department officer fired back, hitting the person. Officials have not said how many times the subject was struck or which law enforcement agent fired the fatal shot. They said no officers were injured in the shoot out.
They said authorities performed first-aid on the person, who was taken to an area hospital where they later died. Neither the person killed, nor the involved officers have been identified at this time. The deputy and officer have been placed on paid administrative leave for the time being.
Now the DOJ's Division of Criminal Investigation, the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Clark County coroner and UW Hospital are investigating the shooting. Officials will turn their reports over to the Clark County District Attorney when their investigation is finished.
