How exercise helps your mental health

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) - May is Mental Health Month, and exercising may be a key ingredient to getting your mental health back on track.

Every year, Mental Health America picks a theme to focus on, and this year it's "Fitness Mind for Body."

Chelsie Smith, a public nurse at the Eau Claire Health Department, said mental and physical health go hand-in-hand.

"Fitness and exercise in general helps release those happy hormones in our brain and our body that decrease some of the stress response that decrease some of those symptoms of depression," said Smith.

"What's recommended in terms of impact on mental health is just ten minutes twice a day on average, it doesn't need to be anything strenuous as long as it's moderate. It's getting your heart going, you're getting your body moving. It can be taking a walk break at work especially outside when we have great days like today," said Shae Havner-Sierer the co-chair of Mental Health in Eau Claire County.

Havner- Sierer said if you're experiencing any mental health issues, adding more exercise can help, but you should also consult with your doctor.
