Annual 'Taste of the Valley' supports Chippewa Valley food vendors

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Brats, barbecue and beer -- hungry locals got a little taste of the Chippewa Valley on Sunday.

Taste of the Valley is organized by the Chippewa Valley After Hours Rotary Club. All proceeds go towards the club's mission of ending hunger in the area. Organizers estimated six thousand locals poured into Phoenix Park to participate in the tastings. There were 16 food vendors from around the area, as well as live music and a kids zone.

"All the vendors here are from around the Chippewa Valley area," said organizer David Shauretee. "I mean we have people from Hallie and Chippewa, all the way up to Bloomer and right here in Eau Claire. The money raised here today goes back to the Chippewa Valley After Hours Rotary Club. And we in turn give that back to hunger-related issues in the Chippewa Valley."

Shauretee said first-time vendors are usually shocked at how much they've sold. Some even ran out of food at past events. He also said the event is a great way to help spread the word about what's available in our local food scene.

"You can see by the people at the table, they keep coming up," said Jim Lucas of Chips Magnet. "Our salsa has always been a pretty good draw. And now so that it can go to something like the rotary, it's probably a good thing. It's been pretty good today."

Organizers hoped to raise $10,000 this year.
