Milwaukee (WISN) - A Manitowoc County man on at least two separate occasions put foreign objects inside sausage links at Johnsonville's Sheboygan plant, a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice released Monday said.
The employee, Jonathan Tilman Lane, of Kiel, was arrested and appeared in federal court in Milwaukee to face two counts of tampering with a consumer product, the release said.
According to federal authorities, Lane's alleged tampering was recorded by surveillance cameras inside the plant. On March 25, he was seen placing cigarette paper in a sausage link. Three days later, he allegedly inserted a wire connector into a sausage link.
The food never made it to the public, authorities said. The plant was shut down and officials discarded all products they believed could have been affected.
If convicted, Lane faces up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and fines up to $500,000. His criminal record includes convictions for burglary, theft and disorderly conduct, court records show.
