Eau Claire (WQOW) - As temperatures continue to rise, so does the risk of food-borne illness from unsafe food handling.
The Eau Claire City-County Health Department is urging grill masters to be extra careful this summer while cooking outdoors. Warmer weather can be ideal for picnics and barbecues, but it also provides a perfect environment for bacteria to multiply and make people sick.
Health officials say you need a food thermometer to ensure your dishes reach safe internal temperatures, and the year-round guidelines to keep your meals safe apply too.
"One of the most important things to prevent food-borne illness is good hand washing, and also not preparing food if you are ill, so those two things will help you stay safe this summer, " said environmental health specialist Valerie Reiter.
Other tips to practice safe food handling include marinating your food in the fridge, and putting leftovers in the fridge within two hours of serving.
