UPDATE: Cause of Chippewa Falls apartment fire determined

UPDATE: The Chippewa Falls Fire Department now knows the cause of an apartment fire in the city on Tuesday.

According to the fire department, the cause of the fire at St. Joseph's Apartments was from an improper use of an extension cord used to power an air conditioning unit.

The cord failed, which ignited the mattress and box spring and spread to the rest of the apartment.

One person was rescued from a roof and another person was taken out of a third story window by firefighters.

Two residents were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and were released. Three people were treated on scene for minor injuries. Two firefighters were hurt but are OK.

Damage is estimated between $80,000-$100,000.

- The fire at an apartment complex in Chippewa Falls has been extinguished, but the damage is leaving some people without a home.

Chippewa Falls Fire Chief Michael Hepfler told News 18 the fire started in a mattress Tuesday morning, but the exact cause is still unknown.

Residents tried putting the second floor fire out with fire extinguishers, but were not able to do so. Seventy-six apartments were evacuated.

One person was rescued from a roof and another person was taken out of a third story window by firefighters.

Two residents were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and were released. Three people were treated on scene for minor injuries. Two firefighters were hurt but are OK.

Residents from 10 apartment units are displaced, and the Red Cross is assisting them. They were allowed to go back into the building to collect belongings but are not allowed to live there because of smoke and fire damage.

St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, next door, is helping residents by providing bathrooms and water.

Damage is estimated between $80,000-$100,000.


Chippewa Falls (WQOW) - Multiple fire crews are on scene of a fire in Chippewa Falls.

Crews started battling the fire at the St. Joseph's Apartments at 912 Pearl Street shortly before 10 a.m. The building is the old St. Joseph's Hospital.

Rescue units were called to the scene. They have also called for mutual aid from other departments.

Chippewa Fire District was able to get everyone out of the building.
