UPDATE: Altoona moving forward with back-in parking

Altoona (WQOW) - The Altoona City Council has decided to move forward with their back-in parking plan at the River Prairie development.

City officials told News 18 they had received complaints about the parking because they didn't understand the rules, struggled to park, or received tickets because they parked incorrectly.

Thursday, the Altoona City Council considered changing the rules to use more traditional parking, but the changes like grounding up the pavement would have cost more than $35,000. In the end, the council decided to increase awareness about the rules through additional signs and lighting.

Altoona (WQOW) - Parking in River Prairie could soon change, as the Altoona City Council is set to discuss possibly reversing the back-in parking.

As you may know, most of the street parking through the River Prairie development is signed for drivers to back into spots. However, according to city officials, council members have received complaints from residents visiting the area, and police are having to ticket vehicles nearly every day.

Officials pointed out that even though signs are clearly posted, some choose to ignore them all together. City leaders said they don't want, what they say was a decision based on safety, to deter people from coming to River Prairie.

"We've had several people say to council members 'Oh, I'm not coming to River Prairie because I don't like that parking,' but recognize that there's as much off-street parking as there is on-street that is just traditional parking-lot parking," said Altoona City Administrator, Mike Golat.

Golat also said, if decided, the cost of the reversal could cost $35,000, and would take time because the lines would have to be ground off the pavement, which he said could leave it looking not as nice as before.

The Altoona City Council will take up this discussion at their meeting on Thursday.
