Baby bison born at Irvine Park zoo

Chippewa Falls (WQOW)- The Irvine Park Zoo in Chippewa Falls is welcoming a newborn animal to its pastures.

A female American bison was born on May 22, and is now the seventh bison to call Irvine Park home. The bison is a lighter brown color, which is rare compared to a dark brown color that is most common. The bison's mother, Whitney, has been caring for the baby for the past three weeks.

The bison was born after a deadly virus struck many of the animals in the park in 2013. Park officials said they are excited to see their bison population growing again, and are making sure to give the newborn the proper care for a healthy life.

"We like to leave them alone because the first two weeks are really critical," said Chippewa Falls Parks, Recreation and Forestry Director, Dick Hebert. "Sometimes there's unfortunately some complications that can arise during the birthing process."

The newborn does not yet have a name, but park officials say they like to name their animals after famous musicians.
