Semi hits train in Lake Hallie, one injured

UPDATE: Lake Hallie Police Chief Cal Smokowicz now says the driver of the semi is a 35-year-old from Lake Hallie instead of a 47-year-old from Las Vegas.

Lake Hallie (WQOW) - One person was injured after driving his semi into a train in Lake Hallie Wednesday morning.

According to Lake Hallie Police Chief Cal Smokowicz, crews responded to a flatbed semi running into a Union Pacific train at the railroad crossing on 30th Ave at about 6:19 a.m. Wednesday. That is just west of Business 53.

The flatbed was hauling construction equipment and headed east on 30th Ave when it failed to yield at a yield sign and hit the train.

The driver of the semi was a 47-year-old man from Las Vegas. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK, according to Smokowicz.

The police department is reminding drivers that trains cannot stop in time to avoid a collision, so vehicles must do so.
