Eau Claire (WQOW) -- The Chippewa Steel are another step closer to building their roster. Open tryouts wrapped up this past week, but one local talent didn't have to prove himself in La Crosse.
Eau Claire Memorial standout Hutson Collins was drafted by the Steel with the 4th pick in the 14th round of the NAHL draft. Collins accounted for 27 points and 15 goals in his senior season with the Old Abes, and he's excited to take his talents to the next level.
"Finding out about the draft was a bit surprising, but it was also a big relief knowing that I have a solid place to play next year, and I just have to focus on making one team this summer," Collins explains, "I think with my style of play, just working hard every shift and making the simple plays. Nothing too fancy, just getting the job done. So I'm going to focus on that this summer, getting faster, stronger, and just focus on making that team in July."
Collins also says he's excited to play in front of the Chippewa Valley once again, "It feels really good to be able to play for another home team as I have the past couple of years for high school. Obviously this is a bit higher level. Chippewa will be playing some other teams from the NAHL that have kids from Eau Claire, so it will be a really good experience."
Collins will report with the rest of the Steel to training camp on July 17th.
