CWD Advisory Team to meet Monday in Altoona

Altoona (WQOW) - The Chippewa Valley Chronic Wasting Disease Advisory Team is meeting Monday. It's in response to a diseased deer that was found in our area.

In March of this year, a wild deer was found dead in Western Eau Claire County. It tested positive for CWD, a neurological disease that impacts deer, elk and moose. The CWD Advisory Team will assist the DNR in finalizing recommendations regarding surveillance and management options for collecting tissue samples.

"The best way to do it, we'll have an outer observation zone were looking at, and then an inner target zone closer to where the CWD was actually found," said Dave Zielke, chair of the Chippewa Valley CWD Advisory Team. "And in that smaller zone, we'll offer landowner tags to allow for additional harvest in that small area to try to get more test samples."

Hunters are encouraged to send in their harvest for testing during the hunting season. If CWD is found, the Center for Disease Control asks that hunters dispose of their meat.

The meeting will take place on Monday at 7 p.m., at the River Prairie Center in Altoona.
