Eau Claire (WQOW) –
The Eau Claire City Council has approved a resolution asking the Eau Claire County Board for a cut of a proposed wheel tax, if it is passed.

The county board's plan would call for a $30 registration fee per vehicle. It's estimated to bring in nearly $2.4 million a year, money that would be used to pay for road projects.

As News 18 has reported, the city council claims that because 72% of those fees would come from city residents, they should get a proportional part of the cut.

"If the county board is actually interested in responding and taking us up on our request then it would probably go to shared services or we'd figure out some other arrangement to come together and hash this out," Eau Claire City Council Acting President Andrew Werthmann, told News 18.

The county board will vote on the $30 wheel tax July 17.

Eau Claire (WQOW) – The Eau Claire City Council is considering asking the county for a piece of the pie, if the county board goes forward with a wheel tax.

The city council will vote Tuesday on a resolution asking the county board to share part of the fees collected from its proposed vehicle registration fee.

The county board is considering imposing a $30 fee per vehicle. Board members said it's necessary because state funding continues to decline, and this would help pay for local road repairs, and years of debt from borrowing money to pay for other projects.

The city council says because 72% of those fees would come from city residents, they should get a proportional part of the cut.

"So, we have the same needs that the county does and we're trying to make up the funds as well. And so what we're saying is, that if people are going to be paying a fee, we have to be seeing some of that money. There's no way around it,” Eau Claire City Council Acting President Andrew Werthmann told News 18.

If the city council approves this resolution Tuesday, it just opens discussion with the county board. The county board will vote on the $30 wheel tax July 17.

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The Eau Claire City Council will consider a resolution on Tuesday to partner with the county board in implementing a wheel tax.

According to the city council agenda, they would ask the county board to share part of the fees collected to go toward the city's 2019 budget.

As News 18 has reported, the county is considering imposing a $30 fee - per vehicle. They said it's necessary because state funding continues to decline. The funds would pay for local road repairs and pay down years of debt from borrowing to pay for projects.

With 79,000 registered cars in the county, the plan is expected to bring in $2.4 million a year.

The city council said city residents would pay 72 percent of those fees, so it would be fair to share the collected fees.
