Eau Claire County Committee sparks conversation about decriminalizing marijuana

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The Eau Claire County Administration Committee wants to get public input on decriminalizing marijuana.

As we've reported, several other counties have looked at adding advisory referendums. According to the committee, the state is looking to take action on marijuana in the spring. While some members have their reservations, they say the public should get to weigh in.

"It's time to look at it seriously, at least... at least put it before the public for them to express their opinion," said county administration committee member Jerry Wilkie.

Wilkie said he'd want to heavily tax marijuana, and put the proceeds toward education, health, and anti-addiction programs.

But much like the tax on tobacco, there are concerns about where the tax money may go. "I have a certain sense of mistrust as to the tax and know that it's going to be used for that which it is going to be used," Colleen Bates, Vice Chair of committee told News 18.

The committee said the next step is to draft an advisory referendum question before proceeding any further.
