Eau Claire (CHIPPEWA VALLEY WELLNESS) - Doctor Dan Czelatdko was with us to talk about the importance of antioxidants.
Free radicals are substances that cause harm to our body. When we think of oxidation we think of what can happen to a metal with water (H2O) or a apple that turns brown with exposure to air. So just like these examples, the body is exposed to these free radicals sometimes from waste in our cells, UV exposure, smoking pollution all contribute. Even someone exercising is exposed to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can then lead to cancer, heart disease, arthritis, stroke, emphysema, Parkinson's and other inflammatory illnesses. So antioxidants neutralize these free radicals therefore promoting good health.
Some factors that cause oxidative stress include a decrease in mitochondrial activity (powerhouses of the cell), excessive exercise, injury/trauma, lack of blood flow, consumption of processed foods, smoking, radiation, chemicals like drugs and pesticides.
We can combat free radicals with diet. Vitamins like A, C, E betacarotene are antioxidants. Foods can be healing in this nature".
The top foods include: blueberries, goji berries, dark chocolate, pecans, artichokes, elderberries, strawberries, raspberries and kale, acai, and gooseberries. Giving our bodies these antioxidants help reduce the damage done by free radicals
