Jefferson Award Winner: Matt Smith

Eau Claire (WQOW) - An Eau Claire mechanic is helping those in need by using his skills to make their ride through life a little less rough.

Mechanic Matt Smith has come to the aid of over a dozen veterans, single parents and first responders in our community by offering them a repair free of charge.

"It's generally a simple repair that takes one maybe two hours," Smith said. "Like a brake job, wheel bearing, tire rod, serpentine belt [or] oil change."

Last year, Smith, owner of Matt's Mobile Truck and Auto Repair, began monthly giveaways on his Facebook page.

"On average there's probably about 300 to 500 people that partake and try to guess a number," Smith said.

"I somehow won," said Katie Plummer.

Plummer is a single mom who needed an oil change and said although it's simple, the service goes a long way.

"It's incredible and it's very heartwarming to see that they will do this for people because it might be little, but it means a lot when it happens," Plummer said.

But Smith doesn't do it all alone. An average repair can range from $150 to $350.

So, he takes on sponsors to help pay for the needed parts.

"When he told me that he wanted to do an event for single moms, that was super important to me because a huge part of who I am is empowering women to be their best selves," said Zoe Hirsh who is affiliated with Northwestern Mutual.

"They are extremely grateful. Some of them, you catch them when they are in a really low spot in life and you get that warm feeling in your heart that you chose the right person," Smith said.

Now, he's looking forward to the next lucky winner. But for now, he has just one message for the community.

"There's a lot of people that just sit around doing nothing, and if everyone in the world just did a little bit of something, I think it would change a lot of things," Smith said.

You can keep up with the giveaway here. He will post a contest once a month and remove it once a winner is selected.
