Eau Claire (WQOW) – As expected, the melting snow and pouring rain is leaving a pool of problems for homeowners and business owners.

Now, locals are turning to area stores for sump pumps and other tools to drain parking lots, basements, yards and other flooded areas. Fleet Farm officials said in the first half of the day on Wednesday, they had more than 50 calls related to sump pumps, and sales are up.

Officials said the most important thing about buying a sump pump is to make sure you have the right one for the job.

“The other part is having the right sump pump for the water,” said Jason Balk, store manager. “If you have a small horse power sump pump and a lot of water to move, it’s going to run out of its highest capacity, really working the whole time to get rid of that water for you. At that point, burn out is a possibility.”

Bigger sump pumps can remove up to 140 gallons of water per minute. Balk said some customers are coming in to buy an additional pump to help take care of flooding, including other items to drain water like wet vacs. Fleet Farm officials said they expect calls to continue as temperatures continue to rise this week.
