Ambulance Laying On Its Side

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- More details have been released into a crash Wednesday night in Wausau involving an ambulance from the Riverside Fire Department.

The Wausau Police Department says officers were dispatched shortly before 6:30 Wednesday night to the intersection of Scott Street and North First Street for a report of a crash involving an ambulance and a passenger vehicle.

They say the ambulance was traveling westbound on Scott Street when it collided with the vehicle that was traveling northbound.

It was determined that the ambulance was being operated in emergency mode while it was transporting a patient to Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

The 72-year old man that was being transported in the ambulance died. The investigation is ongoing into whether the man died as a result of the crash, or the incident he was being transported to the hospital for.

Multiple other non life-threatening injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

The police say the operator of the ambulance was cited for Failure to Obey Red Traffic Signal.
