Old Abes wrestlers participate in drills during a practice on November 29, 2021.

The Old Abes roster is full of young, but dedicated wrestlers as it prepares for a more normal season of practices and matches.

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) - Numbers are up, but experience is limited for Eau Claire Memorial wrestling in 2021.

The Old Abes roster features 13 athletes that have never wrestled before, but the total of 28 participants is higher than last year.

"It's a good opportunity to get better," head coach Sam Burzynski said. "Wrestling is kind of a dying sport and having 28 kids out this year is great."

Ian Johnson, a senior, said the underclassmen have shown a lot of dedication.

"These kids really look up to a lot of us seniors, and I think we're making a really good impact on this team," he said.

Memorial opens the season Thursday against New Richmond High School. Next weekend, the Abes will participate in one of the toughest tournaments in the state, the Husky Invite at Eau Claire North High School.
